Who this course is for

Celtic StudiesThis 1 year, full-time course is part of the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) and has been designed to meet the needs of adult learners who have been out of formal education for 3 years or more (or 5 years if you already have Higher or HN qualifications). There can be special circumstances where an applicant has failed exams or an HNC programme within the last 3-5 years because of illness or family circumstances. Please enquire if you are not sure.

What you will learn (subject to change)  
Celtic Studies Here you will investigate the origins and migrations of early Celtic peoples, as well as about Celtic identity
History of the Celts in Scotland You will learn about impact of Celtic culture and peoples on the development of both early and modern Scottish history
Storytelling in the Celtic Tradition Aspects of the Celtic storytelling tradition is the focus of this topic
Politics in the Celtic Nations You will learn about the influence of Celtic heritage and languages on the politics of the Celtic nations
Heritage Industry in Scotland You will investigate the current heritage industry, and about the experience of visitor attractions
Gaelic You will learn Gaelic at either learner or fluent speaker level. Includes a residential cultural visit to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in Skye to develop Gaelic language skills.

Future prospects

Successful completion of the Access to Higher Education (SWAP) in Celtic Studies will allow progression to Higher National Programmes in Social Science, Events Management and Tourism; or a degree programme in Scottish or Celtic Studies. It also prepares you for first entry level employment in the creative and cultural sector (e.g. trainee venue assistant, front of house assistant, tour guide, museum guide)
