The fascination of sociology lies in the fact that its perspective makes us see in a new light the very world in which we have lived all our lives … It can be said that the first wisdom of sociology is that – things are not what they seem.

Peter Berger Invitation to Sociology

Sociology is focused on understanding and explaining the social world we occupy. At Newbattle the student will be given the opportunity to develop academic skills and subject knowledge. You will be introduced to key sociological theories and the methods Sociologists employ when doing research. Some key themes explored are socialisation, crime and deviance and social class. The balance between contemporary examples and sociological theories is brought together through reading and class discussions.

However not everyone is taken by Sociology.  A well-known Professor of Philosophy had this to say:

I suspect a lot of people feel this about sociology, that there are certain matters which should not be pried into, least of all by half-baked lefties from universities. … I would say also because of this relentless questioning of human institutions and human realities it may be inappropriate for young people to study it.

Sounds like a case for studying Sociology.
