Graduating year : 2017
Course : Celtic Studies

The SWAP course was a great opportunity for me. It really helped to build my confidence. It also gave me a chance to finally begin learning Gaelic, which had been a lifelong ambition, as my father was from the Outer Hebrides. Since starting the Celtic Studies course I have sat the National 5 Gaelic (and incredibly got an ‘A’), this led to me sitting the Higher this year and I am due to start doing an MSc in Language Teaching at Moray House in the Autumn this year. My Gaelic needs ongoing work but I am very motivated and my time at Newbattle was a catalyst for this and has given me a whole new sense of direction. Being able to teach Gaelic in the community would be incredibly fulfilling to me and the promotion of Gaelic (in any capacity) is something I am passionate about. I am extremely grateful to Newbattle for the life changing opportunity that the course has given me. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and the trips to Skye and Stornoway were spectacular too. I’d urge anyone to consider taking on a course at Newbattle as it really is a life changing experience, in stunning surroundings, in a highly supportive environment!!
