I was at Newbattle for two years – 1961- 63. It was very important to me. I had left a London secondary modern school at 15 with no qualifications. I had tried to gain access to universities as a mature student, but was always rejected for lack of qualifications – I was even rejected by Ruskin College, but at least they suggested I try Newbattle! I did – and it worked! I then went to Strathclyde University and left in 1968 with a BA(Hon) Politics and Psychology.
I am now a Member of the House of Lords and chairman of the Good Governance Foundation – a not for profit company working with emerging democracies.
