Beekeeping for Beginners
Wednesdays from 14th September – 19th October 7–9 pm
Learn about the honey bee, the hive, how to carry out a hive inspection, the tools you need to start up a hive, the problems you might encounter and of course, how to harvest your honey! Observe practical bee handling in our College apiary and help put together wax frames to prepare for next year’s harvest. Cost is £50 for this six week course.
‘Roots’ Family History (Beginners)
Mondays from 12th September – 7th November 3:30 – 5:30pm
(no class on 17th October)
Family History research is one of Scotland’s, and the world’s, fastest growing and most rewarding pastimes. This class is designed for those starting off on the search to discover their family roots and those who have some previous experience. BEWARE! Tracing your ancestors is addictive – you have been warned! Cost is £65 for this eight week course.
Placing Newbattle in Scottish History
Tuesdays from 13th September 18th - October 7–9pm
Newbattle Abbey’s history is such a rich and fascinating seam. This course involves students in local history research to broaden our knowledge of the history of Newbattle, its impact on local communities and its place in Scottish history. Themes will include:
- The activities of the Cistercian monks
- The impact of the Reformation and the establishment of Newbattle as a lordship
- The relationship between landlords and tenants in a Scottish parish
- The founding of the College and its connection with the history of working-class education
- Newbattle and the Second World War
Participants will learn how to access local resources and archives, interpret documents and artefacts and conduct their own research. Cost is £50 for this six week course.
Gardening in a Nutshell
Tuesdays from 13th September – 4th October 6:30 – 8:30pm
This four week gardening course is for people who are fairly new to gardening and are looking for a bit of guidance to tidy up their garden for the autumn and want to start planning what they will grow next year. A practical course in our community garden, the course will cover:
- Seed sowing, hardwood cuttings, bulbs, division of herbaceous plants
- Digging and composting, planting shrubs, trees and hedges
- Autumn lawn care
Please dress for outdoors. Cost is £35 for this four week course.
Rough and Ready Choir
Wednesdays 5 – 6pm in the Crypt
As the title suggests, Newbattle’s Rough and Ready Choir is an informal community choir for adults of all ages. We meet most Wednesdays at 5pm for an hour. It’s fun and very relaxing. The choir consists of college staff, students, neighbours, relatives and friends. There is no fee and you don’t have to audition. You don’t have to be able to read music – if you can hold a tune, that’s fine. Come along and join us. Phone the college first to check when the choir is meeting.
Introduction to Scots Language
Mondays from 19th September 7 – 9pm
(26th Sept, 3rd, 24th, 31st Oct, 7th Nov)
Following his popular workshop at the Celtic Festival 2011, Dr Fred Freeman offers an entertaining and informative introduction to Scots language and literature focusing on:
- The history of Scots language from the Angles, Vikings and Flemings onwards
- Vocabulary, idioms and basic grammar
- Words still in common currency
- Middle Scots poets – Dunbar & Henryson
- Songs and poems of the Vernacular Revival – Ramsay, Fergusson and Burns
- Songs and poems of the Modern Period – MacDiarmid, Henderson and Soutar.
Cost is £50 for this six week course.
Ùlpan Scots Gaelic (units 1 – 8 )
Tuesdays from 13th September – 1st November 7–9pm
Developed by Deiseal Ltd, Ùlpan is a new way to learn Gaelic and has proven to be a very popular and effective method. This structured and very enjoyable course concentrates on listening and speaking skills. Cost is £65 for this eight week course. This course is eligible for ILA Scotland funding (see page 3 for details.)
Ùlpan Scots Gaelic (units 19 – 28)
Wednesdays from 14th September – 16th November 7–9pm
This course is for students who have completed the Ulpan Gaelic to Units 18. Other students who have previously attended Beginners Gaelic classes can contact us to discuss if this class will suit them. Cost is £80 for this ten week course – this course is eligible for ILA Scotland funding (see page 3 for details.)
Irish Gaelic for Beginners
Wednesdays from 14th September – 19th October 6 – 7:30pm
Would you like to learn some basic Irish for conversation or to enjoy Irish culture? This six week twilight course will look at the background and development of the Irish language as well as introducing phrases of Irish in greetings, place-names and songs. The course will focus on developing language competence for short social conversations. Cost is £50 for this six week course.
Newbattle Abbey College – Short Course Enrolment and Course Fees 2011
The fee for our 10 week courses is £80, 8 week courses cost £65, 6 week courses cost £50 and 4 week courses cost £35 which includes tea and coffee. Men 65 years and over and women 60 years and over can apply for a reduction of £10 by sending proof of age with their application.
Some of our courses are eligible for ILA funding. ILA Scotland is a Scottish Government scheme that helps you pay for course fees. It is for people who have an income of £22,000 a year or less, or who are on benefits. If you are 16 or over and living in Scotland, you could get £200 towards the cost of our eligible short courses with a learner account from ILA Scotland. If you are interested in applying you should do so now as you cannot apply retrospectively:
