Beekeeping for Beginners
Anyone interested in bees or beekeeping can learn about this fascinating little insect during these evening classes which run twice a year, September – October/April – May.
As a novice bee keeper, you will study the bee and its habitat, learn about hives and beekeeping and watch as we harvest honey and bed the bees down for the winter, waking and feeding them during the course in the spring.
The autumn and spring courses are each stand alone, you may wish to attend both or either. Each course includes both theory and practice and visits to our college apiary to watch practical bee handling using a colony and hive located in the College grounds.
Course Starting Spring 2012
A six week course running at Newbattle Abbey College on Wednesdays 7pm – 9pm. From 11th April – 16th May 2012.
Newbattle Abbey College is delighted to offer this course to anyone interested in learning about the Western Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera).
The course is designed for those interested in starting up as a beekeeper. It would also be of interest to gardeners who would like to contribute to the survival of the bee and those who are interested in the healing properties of hive by products such as pollen, propylis and honey.
You will be introduced to the ancient art of beekeeping as well as learning about the science of honey bee reproduction and honey production
The Spring course begins on 11th April 2012, just as the bees are starting to become more active after the long winter rest. You will learn about this fascinating little insect, its preferred habitat, the impact it has on the natural world, how it makes and stores honey and what you might do as a beekeeper to help the honey bee survive in an increasingly alien world.
The College has its own apiary and as a novice bee keeper, you will learn about hives and beekeeping and help the college beekeeper prepare the bees for a busy harvest in May.
The course includes both the theory and practice of beekeeping including visits to the college apiary to watch practical bee handling at the hive located in the College grounds. (We assume no knowledge and provide all equipment.)
The fee for this six week course is £50. Men and women 60 years and over can apply for a reduction of £10 by sending proof of age with their application. Enrolment form below.
