New course – Starts October 2010

The convenience of home study
Our Open Learning course offers those who are unable to take up a full time place, an opportunity to take advantage of all that Newbattle has to offer.

You will study at home and at certain periods throughout the 2 years, will meet up with your tutors and fellow students during short residential learning experiences at Newbattle.

The course will be taught using blended learning, that is, there will be periods of traditional classroom learning, some learning will be online and some will be done at home.

There will be an induction week on Thursday 28th October, when you will stay at Newbattle to be introduced to all of the subjects you will be studying. You will also be taught how to use the online materials and learn about the support systems available to you when you begin your study at home.

This short residential week will allow you to take part in extra curriculum activities, to get to know the other students and give you a sense of belonging to the community of learners at Newbattle.

This residential experience will be repeated throughout your 2 years study.

The subjects you will study include: History; Psychology; Politics; Sociology; Ecology; Literature and Core Skills. Core skills includes: IT; Maths; Communication and Learning Skills.

The purpose of offering the Newbattle Abbey College Arts + Humanities Award as an Open Learing course is to provide a more flexible way to achieve the Award to adult learners who are unable to consider a full time residential course because of domestic or other commitments.

The award is approved by the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) which guarantees progression to University for successful students.

Most adults studying our Open Learning Arts and Humanities Award at Newbattle Abbey College are eligible for fees to be waived and free board and accommodation to be provided during the residential stay.
