Scotland’s life changing college…

We offer adults with few or no qualifications the opportunity to experience a high quality transformative learning experience within an historic heritage site. You can study full time or by Open Learning - both of which include a residential experience. Our motto is “Sero sed serio” (late but in earnest), and describes our students who are adults over 20 years of age or over, returning to education after diverse life experiences.

What we offer is unique because:

• It is one of the few places in the UK where you can enjoy a residential learning experience;
• There is no upper age limit because we believe that it is never too late to learn; and
• You are living and studying in one of Scotland’s most unique heritage sites.

Subjects studied include: History; Psychology; Politics; Sociology; Literature; Creative Writing; Drama and Ecology as well as Communication, Computing and Mathematics. The Diploma is approved for University entrance although not everyone wants to go to University; many prefer to go on to college or employment. However, most agree that their experience here has truly changed their lives. Full board and accommodation is available supported by a means tested bursary and fee waivers.

The Newbattle award is designed to meet the diverse needs of adult learners. Most students will study on a full time residential basis. There are also a few open learning places for applicants who may find it difficult to commit to full time study.

Returning to Study

Adults returning to study do so for many reasons. Some want to go on to University while others are keen to learn and study in order to achieve their learning potential while planning for further study or better employment opportunities. There are two choices of study: the Diploma which is approved by the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) and guarantees entry to University, and; the Certificate for those whose ambitions lie elsewhere. The course is delivered using a mix of learning and teaching styles. This blend includes classroom teaching, online learning, distance learning and practical outdoor learning.

We have designed this course to ensure that all successful applicants, whether full time or open learning, will have the opportunity of a residential learning experience within a unique heritage site. You will live and learn among adults within a unique 16th century ‘A’ listed building which is built on top of a 12th century Cistercian abbey. You will look out onto magnificent parkland adjacent to ancient woodlands on the banks of the river Esk. In addition, you will be within easy reach of Edinburgh which is only 6 miles from the College.
